Senior Solaris/Unix System Administrator (AH1431808)

Your Role

Administering the servers:

  • Ensure all systems are secure, well-managed, backed-up and monitored.
  • Perform hardware and OS installation and maintenance.
  • Install and maintain Solaris and Linux packages and patches.
  • Maintain system security and participate in security policy discussions.
  • Monitor the operating environments.
  • Assist with resolving problems and recommend changes for improving performance, efficiency and availability.
  • Maintain services like DNS, LDAP, NFS, DHCP, Radius, Mail, Apache and FTP.
  • Provide advanced systems administration support to the DBA team.
  • Participate in the on-call rota.
  • Work on architecture design, capacity planning, upgrade schedules, roadmap and budget development.
  • Design, installation and maintenance of existing and new storage systems (esp. NetApp or SANs).

Manage platform processes:

  • Manage availability including disaster recovery.
  • Assist in the review of new releases and vendor-supplied patches.
  • Analyze incidents and problems and offer solutions.
  • Research new technologies and present recommendations on new hardware and software purchases.
  • Assist the various teams with project designs and architectural input.

Communication and administrative duties:

  • Document and log all changes to system software and configurations.
  • Contribute to the internal knowledge management system by adding workarounds, resolutions and manuals related to platforms and administered systems.
  • Join system administrator and security communities to be aware of the latest trends in the market like Sun Solve, Bugtraq, SANS, etc.

Your Profile

  • 5+ years experience in a similar position.
  • Experience in an international ISP or Telco environment.
  • Very good knowledge of/experience with:
    • Unix OS (Filesystems, Memory Architecture, Platform architecture), Solaris and OS level with Oracle Databases (architecture, sizing, tuning).
    • Managing storage technology and architectures and its application in the ISP/Telco fields or other operating environments of sufficient scale.
    • Solaris 10, zones, ZFS.
    • DNS, DHCP, NFS, Veritas, postfix, VPN, apache and CVS.
    • Content switches and load balancers.
    • Perl and shell scripting skills.
    • Enterprise backup solutions (preferably Veritas NetBackup).
    • Host/network security (VPN, firewall setup and administration).
    • Remedy.
    • Testing.
  • FreeBSD knowledge is an asset.
  • Rigorous, flexible and results oriented.
  • Enthusiastic, communicative, persuasive and positive.
  • Hands-on with a practical approach; knows how “to get things done”.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment within a team atmosphere.
  • Excellent English communication skills – both written and spoken.
  • HBO/university technical degree or significant work experience.
